Cardboard furniture

Krzesło 360 (Dreihundertsechzig), meaning Chair 360, was part of the My Body exercise, aimed at exploring human scale and its practical applications. Working in pairs, we were challenged to design a multipurpose furniture piece using only cardboard at a 1:1 scale.

The name is a fusion of Polish (krzesło for chair) and Austrian German (360 for degrees), reflecting both our diverse backgrounds and the versatility of the design. The 360 signifies the chair’s adaptability—you can rotate it in any direction to transform its function. Depending on how it is positioned, it can serve as a chair, bench, coffee table, storage unit, TV stand, or even a chest-long seat.

Our biggest challenge was working with cardboard, a material far less sturdy than traditional options like wood or metal. To overcome this, we developed a hidden reinforcement system that provided the necessary strength and stability. The design also has potential for scaling and adaptation. By combining two units, laying them on their flat sides, and scaling up, the piece could transform into a public bench - perfect for an airport setting where people could sit on both sides.

This project involved a long and sometimes difficult design process, but the outcome was highly rewarding. It became one of my favorite works, combining creativity, problem-solving, and the joy of seeing a simple material evolve into a functional and dynamic piece of furniture
