Urban Materials Project
Gracia’s Secret Garden
Transformation of hidden inner patios into a vibrant “Shared Living Room” — a lush, multi-level oasis bringing nature and community into one of Barcelona’s least green neighbourhoods. Once private and inaccessible, this reimagined space invites connection, relaxation, and inclusivity, turning forgotten courtyards into a collective sanctuary for everyday life.

Problem
After analyzing Gràcia - Barcelona’s least green neighborhood - and reviewing government data, I identified ”Private Free Spaces to Enhance” with untapped potential. These inner patios within building blocks remain unplanned and underutilized, despite their ability to enrich urban life.
Many residents lack access to greenery or outdoor spaces, particularly the elderly, who often have to walk long distances to reach a plaza. Children have limited safe play areas due to narrow streets and traffic passing through public squares. The neighborhood is in need of accessible, open green spaces near homes, creating opportunities for the community to engage with nature in their daily lives.
Concept
Immerse yourself in the journey to Barcelona’s first “Shared Living Room.” Nestled in the heart of Gràcia, the Secret Garden is a lush, green oasis hidden within one of the city’s least verdant neighborhoods. Once a private, secluded space, it has been transformed into a welcoming public retreat - an escape from the urban concrete jungle. Designed to foster a strong sense of community, this hidden gem features multiple podium-style seating areas enclosed within an intimate inner patio, encouraging connection and conversation. A secret sanctuary now open for all to enjoy.
Design
The Secret Garden unfolds across three distinct levels, creating a dynamic and inviting space for the community. Once a collection of private, divided small gardens, it has now been opened to the public, fostering connection and a shared sense of belonging.
Access is designed for inclusivity, with both steps and a lift ensuring ease of movement. Thoughtfully arranged seating - benches, steps, and platforms - encourages both group gatherings and individual relaxation, making the Secret Garden a true shared living room for the neighborhood.
